Prakash Nagarkatti, PhD
In 2005, Prakash Nagarkatti, PhD was appointed Associate Dean for Basic Science of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He comes to the University after serving for five years as a Wazeter Distinguished Professor and Scholar and as Director of Immunotoxicology in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University.
Dr. Nagarkatti earned his doctorate in viral immunology at the Defense Research and Development Establishment in Gwalior, India. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in immunology at McMaster University Medical Center in Hamilton, Canada. In addition to his appointment at the Medical College of Virginia, he has served in faculty positions at the University of Kentucky and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
During his career, Dr. Nagarkatti has garnered a host of awards. Among them are the National Award for Young Scientists, awarded by the Indian National Science Academy, the Outstanding Teacher Award, presented by the Department of Biology at Virginia Tech, and the Shelton Horseley Award, the highest award granted by the Virginia Academy of Sciences. He has served as a Chair of a National Institutes of Health Study Section on Inflammation and Immunotoxicology and continues to serve as a Regular Member of Innate Immunity and Inflammation Study Section of NIH. In the past, he has also served as a Regular Member of the Cancer Immunology Study Section for the American Cancer Society. He has also worked on the Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Nagarkatti’s research is currently funded extensively by NIH grants. The NIH, Lupus Foundation of America, American Cancer Society, the National Science Foundation, and the Environmental Protection Agency have funded his previous investigations. During his tenure, Dr. Nagarkatti has mentored 13 post-doctoral fellows and 19 graduate students. He is widely published in his discipline and a frequently invited speaker at national and international symposia.University of South Carolina School of Medicine
