Stanley Fowler, Ph.D. Associate Dean for Clinical Research and Special Projects University of South Carolina School of Medicine Dr. Fowler has twenty years of administrative experience as Associate Dean at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. His noted achievements include: introduction of the first telemedicine program in South Carolina and more recently, the South Carolina Video Communications Corridor to promote biomedical research among the state’s medical schools and hospitals; creation of the Primary Care Education Program for medical education in four rural communities of South Carolina and subsequent introduction of the Deans’ Primary Care Clerkship for South Carolina medical students; architect of a partnership between the University of South Carolina and Palmetto Health Richland to form Centers of Research Excellence in Cancer, Geriatrics, and most recently, Neuroscience. He has had numerous administrative assignments including Interim Vice Provost for Research for the University of South Carolina and Executive Director, South Carolina Research Institute. A native of rural Colorado, Dr. Fowler received his undergraduate education at Pomona College in Southern California and his doctorate training with Nobel laureate Christian de Duve at the Rockefeller University in New York. His postdoctoral training continued with a Helen Hay Whitney Foundation Fellowship to the University of Louvain in Belgium and the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. Dr. Fowler served on the faculty of the Rockefeller University in New York City before coming to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1982. Dr. Fowler has extensive research experience in experimental pathology especially the cell pathology of atherosclerosis. In addition to his Helen Hay Whitney Fellowship, his honors include an American Heart Association Established Investigatorship, numerous NIH and Heart Association grants, and membership on NIH study sections. Recently, his research interests have shifted to applications of telemedicine and other technologies to health care delivery in rural settings.
